Acrylic on Canvas
A theme that reoccurs throughout all my work is nostalgia. I grew up in front of the TV and became fond of pop culture. My fascination with pop culture, celebrities, wrestlers, fighters, presidents, comic books, TV characters and aliens has inspired a large, colorful body of work. At the moment I am exploring numerous concepts, my favorite painting series is my ‘arcade’ series, inspired by my weekly visits to an arcade bar in Minneapolis. I also am a jiu-jitsu practitioner, so some of my work is inspired by infamous UFC fighters, wrestlers, and other martial artists. The experience goes by so fast when I am training and I miss or forget critical details. It helps to go home and paint fighters executing a submission, and then being able to go back to the gym and work it on somebody.
The first thing people notice about my artwork is the painterly brush strokes and contrast between dark and bright colors. I paint with acrylics, and I work fast so I am still able to blend and create the desired effect. I experiment with a few different approaches to my paintings, sometimes paintings lean more “cartoony” and sometimes they are more realistic. I am always open to experimentation, so who knows what I will paint next!
Laura was born and raised in Anoka, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis. She graduated from North Hennepin Community College in 2015 and had dreams to be a filmmaker, a director, a playwright and an animator. She has worked in community and professional theater, but painting is her one true calling. In 2019, she started her own house painting company and became a licensed contractor. Being self-employed has given her the flexibility she needs as an artist and has been the most rewarding experience by far.
