ARTIST BIO: Acting as a kind of looking glass, DL's work is an exploration in subjectivity. By painting from a first-person perspective, the viewer becomes the primary subject in the painting -- a figure who is asked to not only witness the picture, but act within it. The figures & environments seen in the work are a mix between a variety of DL's interests: including classical portraiture, Venetian Carnival masks, early American Literature, German as well as "Neo" Expressionism, as well as large-format photography & digital collage. His work is primarily process-based, wherein the process itself critics the historical objectification & erasure of people within (art) history. Bodies are are constructed out of the erasure of layers of under-paintings, speaking to the formation of the modern-identity as the erasure of that person's history. The viewer becomes a witness and participant in the work, and can become both victim and perpetrator. Ultimately, DL's work does not aim to impose meaning or opinion; it aims to encourage the viewer to take action--and to be accountable for their action--as they are.
