Artist statement:
Carole-Yvonne Richard: A moment of ordinary, extraordinary and common life
Painting ordinary life
I paint from my daily life, the encounters and events of ordinary, extraordinary and common life. I paint a human landscape woven with encounters, friendships and events of all kinds. My work focuses on the emotions and feelings associated with certain life experiences that we all face at one time or another in our human journey. The adaptation and vitality of the human being struggling with intense, personal and profound experiences, lived from birth to death, question me and stimulate my creativity.
In a formal way
My work is mainly done through painting. To this technique, are added collage, photo, words and symbolic objects that I staple, knot, tie, wrap, or glue. I also work by accumulation of pictorial elements, assembling several pieces in order to form larger artwork that I call mosaic. My paintings develop from spontaneous and constructed gestures. The spot, the line, the repetition and the shape become my guides. By suggesting landscapes, portraits and abstractions, my work evokes different styles or conventions of art history.
Feeling collectively alive
In a nutshell, to capture this human presence that lives in me, as it also lives in others, to share my portrayal of it, allows us to collectively experience the feeling of being alive.
Bio:
Born in Senneterre in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Québec, Canada, Carole-Yvonne Richard currently lives in Rouyn-Noranda and Senneterre. Her interest in the visual arts developed from a young age through the works of Emily Carr and through contact with her father, a photographer. She had her first solo exhibition in 1986 at the Val-d'Or Exhibition Centre.
While prioritizing her professional artistic career, she will make education her second passion. After a Bachelor's degree in Education (1982), she worked in elementary schools in Senneterre, Prince Edward Island and Rouyn-Noranda. Since 1984, she continues her academic training in art and education, at the University of Ottawa: Master's degree in education and doctoral studies (1992-1997) and at the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue: certificate in visual arts (1984-2005), graduate diploma in clinical hypnosis (2002), graduate diploma in art therapy (2004) and certificate in painting (2007-2011). Along with her personal artistic production, she will dedicate the last twelve years of her teaching career (1982-2015) to teaching drama and visual arts at the secondary level.
From the early 80's until today, she has regularly presented her pictorial work mainly in collective and individual events in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, but also elsewhere in Quebec including AT@Montréal in 2010. She also started performing in 2006 and has performed in Quebec City, Rouyn-Noranda and Senneterre. Her work in visual arts has been presented in more than a dozen solo exhibitions and nearly thirty group exhibitions.
A member of the Regroupement des Artistes en Arts Visuels du Québec (RAAV) and member of the artist-run centre in contemporary art (l'Écart), she now devotes herself full-time to her life as a professional artist.
