Nicole NoZe works with abstract painting, abstract figuration, as well as picture manipulation in order to unleash their potential for forgetting and overcoming internalised formalisation and prejudgement about what is being created - potentially disrupting dissociation from embodied knowledge. By twirling and untwirling circles, ripping paper and sometimes destroying and rebuilding her paintings, taking every-day objects and gluing them on to the canvas and using red, black and pink for their aggressive yet vulnerable symbolism, she strives for an aesthetic that unleashes ambivalent and powerful emotions about what is being seen. From radically reclaiming and exploring (her) female embodiment and female sexuality, as well as symbiosis and separation in relationships, to the dynamics between victims and perpetrators, she explores a variety of themes. They all revolve around the fundamental embodiedness of human existence, vulnerability and aggression, autonomy and subordination and the binary understanding and sensation of these concepts. Coming from a family of jewish shoah survivors she is also reflecting on collective- and transgenerational- as well as individual trauma and the vicious cycles of repetition of certain roles within family and society. Opposing individual and collective taboos and overcoming the fear from the suppressed and repressed, she does not shy away from the dirty, sad, aggressive and ugly and makes clear that unfolding what is swept under the rug is existentially aesthetic and beautiful.
Nicole NoZe (Nicole Zilberszac) studied law in Vienna and is writing a dissertation on “4E Objectivity. Reconceptualising legal objectivity according to the concept of embodied, embedded, enacted and extended cognition”. Her artistic practice began initially in the poetic and cabaret area until Nicole NoZe devoted herself exclusively to the fine arts, primarily to abstract and neofigurative painting as well as digital arts. In November 2018 Nicole NoZe was represented at the art festival “Kunstkomplott” in Salzburg with the exhibition “aus der Haut_unter die Haut" (out of the skin_ under the skin) and presented her solo exhibition “Her Victory" at wienstation in May 2019 in Vienna. In June 2019 some of her works and an interview were published in the London art magazine “Brenda". She is also a fellow of the Westminster Law and Theory Lab, where she joined in a Talk about Art Law and Justice from the artist’s perspective in February 2019 and is exchanging ideas on radically rethinking legal methodology with members of the lab. Currently she is working on installations on the spatiality of the law, combining her academic research with artistic practice.
