Mixed Media on Paper
For Ellen Claes, only form is the essence.
With paper as a carrier, she uses the drawing medium to always start from scratch. The question is repeated without giving meaning as a result. This creates an uncontrollable formal language, pivotal moments of release and holding.
The compulsive is questioned, the control that must always be kept. Shapes and colors fight or collide. Ratio and intuition go into conflict and explore the boundary between control and its loss.
The significance of the drawing is investigated on the basis of these contrasts in order to come to the realization that it has no meaning, except those that the viewer himself puts into it.
The image does not so much require decoding of that meaning, but allows the viewer to articulate what goes on outside of the conscious meaning.
We are not asked to interpret, but to ponder. Is it just our projection to see something expressed in the constellation of these forms?
