ABOIUT THE ARTIST:

Veronica Chandler

I was born and raised in Quito, Ecuador, studied graphic design in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and currently reside near Philadelphia in the United States.  My life experiences from all three cultures influence my art.

My current project is the Kachina series.  A “kachina” is a deified ancestral spirit in the mythology of the indigenous Pueblo people; Native-Americans from the southwestern United States.

The Kachina art series was inspired by my struggles with post-partum depression and my journey to recovery.  On this journey I took a trip to Arizona (USA) and discovered kachina dolls.  I was immediately drawn to them.  I was captivated by their powerful symbolism.  In them I saw representations of healing, blessings from a higher power, a connection to nature and Mother Earth, and a portrayal of the strength and empowerment of women.  In these native kachina dolls, I also feel a bond to my native country of Ecuador, where the indigenous people there are a large part of the national culture and my own heritage.

In my Kachina art, I strive to embody this symbolism by painting images of the kachina dolls, often in female form.  I also look to incorporate many of the native symbols representing different aspects of nature.
