ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Rafael Arzuagawas born in Cuba in the 1960s and was a prominent artist in the City of Santiago de Cuba during the late 1970s and ‘80s. He later moved to Havana where he worked professionally as a visual artist with a focus in acrylic and multi-media on canvas as well as sculpture. Rafael was invited to the United States in 2001 to participate in a solo exhibition of his art in Los Angeles. Rafael lived and exhibited his art in the San Francisco Bay Area until he moved in 2021 to the Philadelphia area where he conceived this new series of paintings. This series depicts life on an island imagined by the artist called Kalumga, where black Caribbean people live, never touched by slavery or colonization.
