From App to on the Map: How a Pioneering Arts Professional Built Up an iPhone App into a Tribeca Arts Center with a White box Gallery Attached and a stable of Established artists.
Opening 03/07/2019, 6-9 pm
On March 7, 2019, Shane Townley and his team will expand NYA to 7 Franklin Place, a multi-purpose cultural institution conceived as a significant site
for artistic expression and discussion in the heart of Tribeca. On this historic
occasion, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the Armory Show as well as the TriBeCa Art+Culture night, NYA Gallery invites artists, collectors, critics, and
patrons to celebrate the grand opening of its new location on the corner of Broadway and Franklin Place. A group exhibition featuring select gallery artists will accompany the opening and reception.
NYA's new venue will comprise 9,000 square feet across 3 floors for artistic production, collaboration, and exhibition with a robust schedule of public programming slated for later this year. To name only one example, there will be monthly open studios led by gallery guides that will feature artists and participants in the international residency program. The gallery will feature 1,000 square feet of stunning exhibition space on the ground level, 22 artist studios, and an extensive 1,500-square-foot fine art storage facility for framing, crating, and shipping in partnership with Frames and Stretchers. Moreover, there will be a private entrance for VIP arrivals and delivery of over-sized artworks along the cobblestone alley of Franklin Place—one of the last privately owned streets in Manhattan.
NYA, Shane Townley, and a Move Long in the Making
Shane Townley, Owner and Art Director, got his start managing different galleries in San Clemente and Laguna Beach in the early 2000s. While in California, he launched Townley Arts Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) arts non-profit dedicated to providing art supplies and arts education programs to children's hospitals. Later, Townley Gallery began an auction series to raise funds for the non-profit. In 2011, he launched

NewYorkART.com, an iPhone application designed to connect artists with collectors and make navigating the art market more manageable. In 2015, he moved to New York to found Gallery104 in the art center, an artist-led gallery focusing on emerging artists working across the disciplines of painting, sculpture, and photography. As an artist himself—once providing bottle label artwork for a Sonoma winery—Townley has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to providing artists with the necessary resources to access the art market, with NYA Gallery being the most recent example.
Since 2015, Townley has been searching for the right location for NYA. After scouting locations in Jersey City, Greenpoint, SoHo, the Lower East Side, and Chelsea, he ultimately concluded that Tribeca would be the most prudent move as there is already an artistic critical mass coalescing in the historic neighborhood. The gallery’s move to Tribeca is part and parcel of a larger trend that has been building since 2013, putting Townley’s venture in the company of other dealers, art advisors, and gallerists such as Postmasters, James Cohan, Andrew Kreps, and CANADA. Aside from the benefit of more square footage for less money, Tribeca also holds the advantages of easy access to multiple subway lines, art supply stores, and international shipping companies.
NYA Representation, Studio Rentals & International Residency Program
Artists interested in submitting materials for consideration for gallery representation may apply through the jury selection process here. Alternatively, those looking to apply for the international residency program or studio space can follow this link. Artist-in- Residence programs exist to serve artists, academicians, curators, and other arts professionals in the formulation of new work at every stage of development. While some programs are incorporated within larger institutions, such as museums, universities, or galleries, others exist solely to support residential exchange programs. In this spirit, NYA’s residency program is open to emerging artists to provide the space, time, and critical support required to produce new work as well as offer access to curators, critics, artists, collectors, and the broader cultural community in Tribeca. NYA will offer 3 complimentary studio spaces, funded by the Townley Arts Foundation. As well, thanks to the generous support of the Eileen Kaminsky Family Foundation (ESKFF), each resident will receive a stipend for supplies.
NYAFAIR rentals are priced starting at $1,000/month, which includes full promotion on the gallery’s diverse digital platforms (NYA’s website and iPhone App - newyorkart.com); the opportunity to exhibit at select art fairs; and the chance to have a solo show at 7 Franklin Place or the gallery’s sister location in Laguna Beach.
