Alou Dia

Alou XII (b. 1986) hails from Dakar, Senegal. His childhood, unbeknownst to him at the time, was the very beginning of his introduction to the arts. In a place devoid of water, electricity and Internet, he and his friends relied on their imaginations. This scarce and unforgiving environment awakened his mind to the ability to create art from deprivation.

He went on to study art and architecture at École d'Art Appliqué de Lyon, École des Beaux Art de Marseille, and University of Montreal.

Alou XII's body of work investigates the dynamics of landscape and limits of perception. His art does not reference recognisable form. Negotiating the concept of landscape through the lens of nostalgia, he aims to approach a wide range of subjects in a multi-layered way to involve the viewer in a manner that is sometimes physical. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted.
