My name is Ellen Claes. I am a 42-year-old female from Alken, Belgium. I am self-taught and have not had any artistic training. I absolutely cannot draw but I believe that this is also my strength. I am free from all artistic rules. With my work I want to show that we live in a world where we are constantly confronted with the principle of 'too much' 'not enough'. I am not slim enough, I eat too much. With our thoughts we create this world in which we are never completely 'whole'. We are rarely satisfied and keep looking for 'something new’, something that can make us' whole'. So that we feel enough. We often do not recognize these patterns and we keep looking for the same thing, doing the same thing repeatedly. In my drawings I always use the same patterns and shapes to represent this. I completely fill the white sheet to indicate that we are not aware of these thoughts, their impact and the quantity. But also as a complaint against the ever increasing amount of information that is being offered to us and that makes us feel 'not enough'. I clear my own head with drawing, it relaxes me. I work intuitively and look for a balance between color and form.
