Baldwin grew up in Edmonton, in a household facing the common
struggle of poverty. He could be found most nights scribbling
away at the dinner table with some loose paper found about the house. This love
for art expanded as he grew older, developing in form and style. Throughout his
childhood he moved frequently and was placed in different schools, not becoming
very well adapted to the scholastic model, but came in contact with various art
teachers. Baldwin returned to school after 14 years, first to Grant MacEwan
University, then to the University of Alberta to further refine his skills as an artist.
Painting makes up the core of his work. Currently Baldwin is trying to tie together
different mediums, such as oil paint, ink, paper, pencil and watercolor to create a
vocabulary through brush stroke or mark making that he feels communicates a
beauty that can be found in the everyday. This language that stems from his youth
provides the foundation for his current work and extends into his aspirations to
find the shining allure of the human condition that we all share.
