I am an intuitive abstract painter. I start with a white canvas and then let my mind, emotions and music guide my hands. This is a tricky process, one that I’ve been “developing” for 30 years. My greatest influences were the old masters; works by Renoir and Monet, the figurative work of Amadeo Modigliani, and the beautiful portraits of John Singer Sargent. I also studied art at the University of Houston, took private art classes and poured over how-to art books and magazines. I taught myself how to paint and then how to draw lifelike portraits from photographs in pencil and later in pastel. And then, I discovered the delicious freedom of abstraction. I like to start a painting by randomly marking up the pristine canvas with a black oil pastel or graphite pencil, then I haphazardly smear or rag on paint around and over the marks to cover the canvas. I never know what I’m going to get…sometimes it’s the start of a landscape, other times human forms appear, and sometimes color, texture and brush strokes became the dramatic focus. I just follow along. I love the feeling that comes from throwing paint and artistic caution to the wind; the feeling of the presence of something transcendent, like a spiritual electricity, of being an alchemist, of staying open and letting the work come through me. The excitement I feel with each encounter of the “canvas kind” is the feeling that I have no limitations. I’m so blessed to have found the courage to go with this flow and follow this process.
