This illustration is for a poem by Lee Pennington in his book, recently nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, entitled Appalachian Newground. It illustrates a poem about his father, a farmer, who planted young trees on a hilltop, and then was buried there. As the poet walks on the hilltop he imagines his father among the roots of those trees, now grown tall and deep.
