Influenced by the writings of Medieval female saints, self-help books, and feminist texts, the figures in Hinz's are familiar parts of the body, but are noticeably not quite right. Set in domestic environments such as the bedroom or the bathroom, her figures attempt to reconstruct themselves, but are ultimately incomplete, defective results, comprised of miscellaneous body parts. While Hinz's figures search for relief--engaged in ceremonial cleansing or beautification rituals, spells, or prayers--their extreme states reveal the longing for vindication inherent…
